64E-5.638. Radiation Monitoring Devices

  • 1(1) A licensee shall have a permanent radiation monitor in each teletherapy, 13medium or high dose rate remote afterloader, or gamma stereotactic radiosurgery 24room capable of continuously monitoring 29radiation levels31.

    32(2) Each radiation monitor shall be capable of providing visible notice of a teletherapy unit, 47medium or high dose rate remote afterloader unit, or gamma stereotactic radiosurgery unit 60malfunction that results in an exposed or partially exposed source. The visible indicator of high radiation levels shall be observable by an individual entering the teletherapy, 86medium or high dose rate remote afterloader, or gamma stereotactic radiosurgery 97room.

    98(3) Each radiation monitor shall be equipped with a backup power supply separate from the power supply to the teletherapy unit, 119medium or high dose rate remote afterloader unit, or gamma stereotactic radiosurgery unit132. This backup power supply may be a battery system.

    142(4) Each radiation monitor shall be checked daily with a dedicated check source for proper operation before the teletherapy unit, 162medium or high dose rate remote afterloader unit, or gamma stereotactic radiosurgery unit 175is used.

    177(5) A licensee shall maintain a record of the check required by subsection 19064E-5.638(4), 191F.A.C., for 3 years. The record shall include the date of the check, notation what the monitor indicates when its detector is and is not exposed to the source, and the initials of the individual who performed the check.

    230(6) If a radiation monitor is inoperable, the licensee shall require any individual entering the teletherapy, 246medium or high dose rate remote afterloader, or gamma stereotactic radiosurgery 257room to use a radiation survey instrument or audible alarm personal dosimeter to monitor for any malfunction of the source exposure mechanism that may result in an exposed or partially exposed source. The radiation survey instrument or dosimeter shall be checked with a dedicated check source for proper operation at the beginning of each day of use. The licensee shall keep a record as described in subsection 32464E-5.638(5), 325F.A.C.

    326(7) A licensee shall promptly repair or replace the radiation monitor if it is inoperable.
