64E-5.661. Training for the Oral Administration of Sodium Iodide I-131 Requiring A Written Directive in Quantities Less Than or Equal to 1.22 Gigabecquerels (33 Millicuries)

  • 1Except as provided in Rule 664E-5.657, 7F.A.C., the licensee shall require an authorized user for the oral administration of sodium iodide I-131 requiring a written directive in quantities less than or equal to 1.22 Gigabecquerels (33 millicuries), to:

    39(1) Be certified by a medical specialty board whose certification process includes all of the requirements in paragraphs 5764E-5.661(3)(a) 58and 5964E-5.661(3)(b), 60F.A.C., of this section and whose certification process has been recognized by the NRC or an agreement state and who meets the requirements in paragraph 8564E-5.661(3)(c), 86F.A.C., of this section. (The names of board certifications which have been recognized by the NRC or an agreement state will be posted on the NRC’s Web page at http://www.nrc.gov/materials/miau/med-use-toolkit/spec-board-cert.html.); or

    117(2) Be an authorized user under Rule 12464E-5.660, 125F.A.C., or uses listed in sub-sub-subparagraph 13164E-5.660(2)(a)2.g.132(I) or 13464E-5.660(2)(a)2.g.135(II), Rule 13764E-5.662, 138F.A.C., or equivalent agreement state requirements; or

    145(3)(a) Has successfully completed 80 hours of classroom and laboratory training, applicable to the medical use of sodium iodide I-131 for procedures requiring a written directive. The training must include the following:

    1771. Radiation physics and instrumentation;

    1822. Radiation protection;

    1853. Mathematics pertaining to the use and measurement of radioactivity;

    1954. Chemistry of radioactive material for medical use; and

    2045. Radiation biology; and

    208(b) Have work experience, under the supervision of an authorized user who meets the requirements in Rule 22564E-5.657, 22664E-5.660, 22764E-5.661 228or 22964E-5.662, 230F.A.C., NRC or equivalent Agreement State requirements. A supervising authorized user who meets the requirements in subsection 24764E-5.660(2), 248F.A.C., must also have experience in administering dosages as specified in sub-sub-subparagraph 26064E-5.660(2)(a)2.g.261(I) or 26364E-5.660(2)(a)2.g.264(II), F.A.C. The work experience must involve the following:

    2731. Ordering, receiving, and unpacking radioactive materials safely and performing the related radiation surveys;

    2872. Performing quality control procedures on instruments used to determine the activity of dosages and performing checks for proper operation of survey meters;

    3103. Calculating, measuring, and safely preparing patient or human research subject dosages;

    3224. Using administrative controls to prevent a medical event involving the use of radioactive material;

    3375. Using procedures to contain spilled radioactive material safely and using proper decontamination procedures; and

    3526. Administering dosages to patients or human research subjects, that includes at least 3 cases involving the oral administration of less than or equal to 1.22 gigabecquerels (33 millicuries) of sodium iodide I-131; and

    386(c) Have obtained written attestation that the individual has satisfactorily completed the requirements in paragraphs 40164E-5.661(3)(a) 402and 40364E-5.661(3)(b), 404F.A.C., of this section, and have demonstrated the ability to function independently as an authorized user to fulfill the radiation safety related duties for a medical use licensee 432that required a written directive under Rule 43964E-5.626, 44064E-5.627 441or 44264E-5.630, 443F.A.C. Have obtained written attestation, signed by a preceptor authorized user or a residency program director who represents a consensus of residency program faculties (as long as at least one member of the residency program faculty is an authorized individual in the same category designated by the applicant seeking authorized status) who meets the requirements in Rule 50064E-5.657, 50164E-5.660, 50264E-5.661 503or 50464E-5.662, 505F.A.C., NRC or equivalent Agreement State requirements. A preceptor authorized user, who meets the requirement in subsection 52264E-5.660(2), 523F.A.C., must also have experience in administering dosages as specified in sub-sub-subparagraph 53564E-5.660(2)(a)2.g.536(I) or 53864E-5.660(2)(a)2.g.539(II), F.A.C.
