Under the auspices of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is conducting this meeting. The meeting is regarding the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) listed Etna Turpentine Camp located within the project area of the Florida Department of Transportation, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise Suncoast Parkway 2 expansion project in Hernando and Citrus Counties. The Etna Turpentine Camp (8CI795) is a 31-acre archaeological site located within the Withlacoochee State Forest in south-central Citrus County, Florida. Etna was a working turpentine operation from around 1898 or 1899 to around 1915 and was abandoned in 1926. This is the second meeting on this issue and the purpose of this meeting is to partner with the local community to discuss avoidance of, minimization, and/or mitigation for the Etna Turpentine Camp as part of the Service’s work with the State of Florida on a related Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP).
