64E-5.653. Training for Ophthalmic Use of Strontium 90

  • 1Except as provided in Rule 664E-5.657, 7F.A.C., the licensee shall require the authorized user of only strontium 90 for ophthalmic radiotherapy to:

    23(1) Be authorized user under Rule 2964E-5.652, 30F.A.C., NRC or equivalent Agreement State requirements; or

    38(2)(a) Have completed 24 hours of classroom and laboratory training applicable to the medical use of strontium-90 for ophthalmic radiotherapy. The training must include the following:

    641. Radiation physics and instrumentation:

    692. Radiation protection;

    723. Mathematics pertaining to the use and measurement of radioactivity; and

    834. Radiation biology; and

    87(b) Have supervised clinical training in ophthalmic radiotherapy under the supervision of an authorized user at a medical institution, clinic, or private practice that includes the use of strontium-90 for the ophthalmic treatment of five individuals. This supervised clinical training must involve the following:

    1311. Examination of each individual to be treated;

    1392. Calculation of the dose to be administered;

    1473. Administration of the dose; and

    1534. Follow-up and review of each individual’s case history; and

    163(c) Have obtained written attestation, signed by a preceptor authorized user or a residency program director who represents a consensus of residency program faculties (as long as at least one member of the residency program faculty is an authorized individual in the same category designated by the applicant seeking authorized status) who meets the requirements in Rule 22064E-5.657, 22164E-5.652 222or 22364E-5.653, 224F.A.C., NRC or equivalent Agreement State requirements, that the individual has satisfactorily completed the requirements in paragraphs 24164E-5.653(2)(a) 242and 24364E-5.653(2)(b), 244F.A.C., of this section and have demonstrated the ability to function independently as an authorized user to fulfill the radiation safety related duties for a medical use licensee 272authorized for strontium-90 for ophthalmic use.
