6A-4.0172. Specialization Requirements for Certification in the Area of Hearing Impaired (Grades K-12) - Academic Class
1(1) Plan One. A bachelor’s or higher degree with an undergraduate or graduate major in deaf education; or
19(2) Plan Two. A bachelor’s or higher degree with thirty (30) semester hours in exceptional student education to include credit in the areas specified below:
44(a) Foundations of exceptional student education to include historical perspectives, student characteristics, and trends and issues;
60(b) Educational management of exceptional students to include classroom organization, behavior management, and consultation skills;
75(c) Audiology, anatomy and physiology of human speech and auditory mechanisms, including assessment, amplification, and assistive listening devices;
93(d) Introduction to education of students who are deaf or hard of hearing to include the nature and needs of 113students who are deaf or hard of hearing or deaf or hard of hearing with additional disabilities, 130trends and issues, family support and intervention, and community resources;
140(e) Language development to include the application of English 149and American Sign Language 153linguistics, psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics to the education of students 162who are deaf or hard of hearing, 169including ages birth to five (5) years;
176(f) Auditory development and learning to include methods of auditory learning, assessment, and techniques for evaluating the acoustic environment;
195(g) Manual communication to include manually coded English and American Sign Language.
207(h) Instructional strategies for teaching students who are 215deaf or hard of hearing 220to include credit in the following:
2261. Teaching language to include instructional procedures to effect language learning to students 239who are deaf or hard of hearing 246including ages birth to age five (5) years;
2542. Speech development to include production and transmission of speech and instructional and assessment strategies to facilitate the development of speech skills for students 278who are deaf or hard of hearing 285including ages birth to age five (5) years;
2933. Teaching reading to students 298who are deaf or hard of hearing 305to include theories, curricular adaptations, and assessment;
3124. Teaching mathematics, science, and social studies to students 321who are deaf or hard of hearing 328to include procedures for curricular adaptations; and,
3355. Teaching social and personal skills for students 343who are deaf or hard of hearing 350to include employability skills, career awareness, and transition planning for adult living.
