65C-46.018. Standards for Wilderness Camps

  • 1(1) The child-caring agency providing 24-hour care to youth as a wilderness camp 14must meet the licensing requirements set forth in 22Rules 65C-46.001 through 65C-46.014, F.A.C., 27in addition to the program standards in this rule.

    36(2) Location.

    38(a) 39The location of a camp shall not present a fire, health, or safety hazard.

    53(b) A wilderness camp shall only be established at a location where land that does not have a surplus of water.

    74(3) Child-caring agencies shall provide each child with a closet or chest of drawers for clothing and personal belongings which shall be reserved for the individual child’s use or an alternative storage.

    106(4) Emergency Response and Prevention Plan.

    112(a) The child-caring agency shall have a system in place that provides for an immediate response in case of an emergency. The system must include the ability to immediately notify appropriate agency staff, police, fire department, physician, poison control center, ambulance, or other emergency services that may be needed.

    161(b) 162A 163travel plan shall be developed which includes an itinerary and a pre-established check-in time for any programs which are mobile in the wilderness. This plan shall be kept on file at the program’s office or left with a designated home base person205.

    206(c) 207A pre-established emergency assistance plan 212shall 213be initiated upon 216the 217failure of a traveling group 222to 223meet the check-in time.

    227(5) A wilderness camp may 232utilize 233a shift or house parent staffing model.

    240(6) The child caring agency shall ensure staff receive program specific wilderness training to include topics such as safety, technical skills, leadership, 262and 263problem solving skills266.
